“Drop the track, bring the ruckus! Praise the Lord, God is truly among us!  As a member of The New Olivet Baptist Church Sanctuary Choir, that is exactly what took place on Sunday, May 18, 2003 at Isaac Hayes’ Music, Food, Passion.  The CD Listening Party for the choir’s newest offering, ‘4 God 2 God: Second Chances’ gave this piece of real estate something to remember.  As always, ‘The Olives’ came out in grand style.  For two hours patrons were treated to an eclectic mix of gospel, jazz, fashion, comedy, fellowship, good food and fun.  Clarity of purpose was evident from start to finish and the star of the hour was God Himself in three persons:  Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Under the gracious invitation of Pastor Kenneth T. Whalum, Jr., First Lady Sheila Whalum and Isaac Hayes’ establishment those in attendance were invited to sample a taste of the CD but most of all the joy of God’s goodness in song, praise and worship.  Kevin Whalum gave a truly refreshing performance from his new CD, ‘Timetable’.  His musical offering is not only unique but gives a little peek into the foundation of his music, the people, places, family, friends and things that have inspired him.  I urge everyone to purchase this project.  It is a mixture of music, storytelling, history and rhyme.  From the first cut, ‘The Love’ to ‘Passin’ It On’, the listener is taken on a scenic yet musical journey through the life and times of Kevin Whalum.  For every song on this album there is a passion that reels the listener in and wraps you up in a whirlwind of melodic sound.  You are truly convinced that this man is inspired by what he calls ‘The Love’.

The sights and musical sounds of the day gave way to God’s creative gifts in fashion as Norma’s fashions took center stage with a mini showcase of ladies’ finery.  Patrons saw what the well-dressed lady Memphian should wear on any special occasion.  Each outfit showcased had matching accessories from hats, and bags to shoes.  First Lady Sheila Whalum took to the stage to let everyone know that quiet grace also has divine flair as she modeled a delicate pink ensemble with matching hat, bag and shoes.  The oooos and ahhhs she received seemed to let everyone know that all is well in the universe.  The commentator was so thankful for her help, that the shop blessed ‘Queen Sheila’ by giving her the entire ensemble as a way of showing their appreciation for helping with the show.

The afternoon continued as the ‘The New Olivet Express’ rolled out more surprises by giving away concert tickets, CDs and t-shirts.  With the help of Michael Adrian Davis of ‘Hallelujah FM, 95.7’ and ABC 24’s Dee Griffin as MCs patrons got a chance to laugh, receive and fellowship over a delicious meal.  Whether you enjoy buffet or tableside service, Isaac Hayes’ Music, Food, Passion has everything you would ever want to eat at a Sunday meal.

From this interlude, the afternoon shifted into high gear as the choir gave listeners a heightened sample of the CD.  Two cuts in particular, ‘We Need You Now’, ‘Praise Melody’ and Kenneth T. Whalum, Jr's.’ ‘Falling in Love’ are destined to be staples for the album. This writer thanks all soloists in voice and instrument for their anointed performances.  Under the direction of Minister of Music Allen Todd, II with Pastor Whalum as lead, the choir gave listeners a taste of what some fans will groove to and call ‘my jam’.  As I viewed the festivities from the stage and my seat,  I noticed that music soothes all who listen.  It comes in many shapes, forms and styles.  It is God appealing to our sense of beauty, creativity and style.  If we can look beyond the beat, melody or rhythm we would see that God is multifaceted but is also one in the same.  In the early stages of 4 God 2 God: Second Chances, the choir was given insight on how each song, melody or delivery was to be done.  We were called to excellence.  Excellence of the highest order would require commitment based upon how we worshipped God as a choir.

For Allen Todd, II and Band Leader, Adrian Davis, no sacrifice of voice was too great.  Our task was simple: our best, nothing less.  Our collective efforts in all areas produced last Sunday’s magnificent show.  As I archive this piece, I will count this experience as one of the best of my life.  It is truly an honor to worship and fellowship with ‘those who strive for the faith’.  God was truly present, for when He throws a party, there are no returned tickets, all limos arrive on time, and the venue is sweet with no cheap seats.
